Masks 21.5 - Jason Tries to Breathe [Cutscene]

[I think it’s given Jason some guidance and direction. It was particularly fun (and somewhat cathartic in an askew way this week) and had a blend of things I wanted to do with the character and things that were unexpected and even serendipitous. So win-win, thanks.]

And, also, if anyone has never watched Sneakers, I stand by Jason (of course) in recommending it as a triffically fun movie, which not only has all sorts of interesting discussion about truth and information and secrets and lies power and anarchy and trust … but ultimately (as Jason realizes above, and which hadn’t occurred to me when Jason was first starting to talk about the movie) friendship and loyalty and reaching out for help and being able to depend on your team of fellow misfits.

Also a remarkable cast and any number of quotable lines.

One final filip: A good chunk of the emotion and a bit of the direction above was driven by my mom, who’s angsting mightily about her impending move to Colorado (which I am here in SoCal to assist with, ETA Saturday and counting) and leaving behind friends and her house of forty years and facing massive upheaval and change to everything she’s come to Expect From Day To Day Life over these four decades (even if that itself has changed significantly during that time). As I am at least as much a creature of habit and expectation as Mom, those emotional concerns have weighed heavily on me even as the rational side of me sees this move as absolutely the right and optimal solution for her for an overwhelming series of reasons.

So even beyond the story situation, I was able to channel a bit of that emotion of hers into Jason’s own Fear and Loathing over the massive upheavals to his own personal self-image and situation, which was, as I said, a bit cathartic – and was able to take in turn some of Numina’s counsel and consolation to heart as well. I wish I could be even 10% as comforting in my words as Numina* was (or that Mom’s stress over this were as “quickly” allayed as Jason’s), but fiction is still a powerful tool to point the way.

So, there’s that.

“Try new things, there will be something for you” and “you aren’t alone” were some of the themes when I talked to my dad about assisted living, a year ago. If it helped you out, I’m glad.

And an added bonus for Jason:

This has been a GREAT thing to read.

Sorry for the delay in my own comments. Gmail suddenly decided Roll20 notifications were spam about four or five days ago, and I just noticed this morning. :frowning: It’s been hectic, catching up.

At Jason’s option, it sounds like there was a very strong Comfort & Support + Jason sharing vulnerability or weakness. Link’s Mundane is 3 and he has influence, so basically he’d only fail the C&S on a 2. Jason’s team move says: “give them Influence over you and ask if they honestly think there’s hope for you. If they say yes, mark potential or clear one box of your doom track. If they say no, mark a condition or mark your doom track.”

It sounds like he did that, and Numina clearly thinks there’s hope. I feel like this whole conversation definitely pushed Jason closer to getting out of his spiral, and I’d love it if that was mechanically supported too (by getting him potential to get there).

I support all of this.

I certainly think all the requirements for comfort and support have been met on both sides. Also we should start a thread for any other team moves that might have happened over the elapsed time period.

I am quite good with that. Will ponder if I prefer potential or un-Doom.

In theory a number of the emails Leo sent, or even some of “performance notes” comments I made to folk could have similar C&S potential. I did mine for RP not for mechanics, but if it benefits folk I’m talking with (or if the players had further comments back) I’d be happy to do whatever.

It’s been one of my favorites, both parts. And the cartoon was the nicest capper.
