MENAGERIE #32 - FUTURE. TENSE. [Recap]

Hmmm… I like where that’s heading.

Though I don’t want to have a whole half-season-in-the-future kind of thing, in any case, because there’s a lot of good stuff going on and coming up in the present.

I partly missed the potential there because I read that as “Comet” not Streak for some reason.

Two good ways to handle that:

  • Hard time limit before we’re forcefully sent back to our own time (rubber band effect OR possibly thread in something involving Doctor Infinity[!!!] for GG).
  • San Dimas Time is in full effect.

Just a bit of planning can go a long way to keeping it locked down and fast. An establishing scene explaining the Bot’s deal (at the start or the end), some raid against some Rook controlled territory or facility that reveals stuff for one or more of us, and a quick return should be doable in a single session, or at most two. Off the top of my head:

  • Uses of moves like Pierce the Mask, Unleash Your Powers, or Directly Engage (to hold off opposition while a teammate does some delicate but important operation) can unlock specific bits of information for each PC.
  • Mercury & the Gale family want any information implicating Rook in shenanigans that can be brought back and used against them.
  • Leo wants whatever will pin down the location/real truth about his father. Assuming he’s actually in Rook’s clutches, this could be the location he was being kept, or the identities of one or more AEGIS moles for Waters to question.
  • If Ghost Girl found the vengeful dead waiting for justice in the Sepiaverse, I imagine the Bad Future will be rich with similar potential.
  • If (hah) Rook has ties to supervillains or major movers other than Rossum, some familiar names might pop up for Charade.
  • I don’t have anything specific in mind for Concord, but he got Vector’s memories and would probably be instrumental in helping Streak out of a coma, so hopefully that’s his time to shine?

In return, if the Bot successfully makes his case, Leo hands over some kind of tech bootstrap, and we see what happens next.

None of this would need to happen next session - if we have a few in-game days, we could go for a session or two before this happened. None of the information given here feels like it’d demand more than a typical set of love letters, so I’m hoping it would be light to prep.

And yeah, any kind of time travel like this can aggravate Dr. Infinity, which can bite us sooner or later. I honestly prefer that to San Dimas Time. I’d hope just wanting to get back from this future would drive us to make it quick.

Excellent thoughts from both of you. Thanks!

1. The Bot is Leo, but his memories have been been deliberately messed with - for example, via Hecate or some other kind of Veil effect, or some high-tech meddling by these evil future corporations.

My immediate thought in reading this was that it was Leo himself who, in creating himself as the Bot, decided that this whole process was far too dangerous for even him to use (to the world, or just himself, if, e.g., all his previous copies like Aria and Summer and Otto died in some tragic fashion), and intentionally removed the memories from himself during the conversion. And now he’s changed his mind.

(Or, alternately, he’s a Leo backup and this knowledge is something that Leo’s intentionally blocked in the Heart Machine from backups so that it can’t lead to the future Leo-as-Ultron/Macninesmith-replicating-himself-forever scenario.)

4. The Bot is Leo, but his memories were corrupted or lost - for example, brain damage before or during a transfer to a robot shell.

[…] Since he can use any Heart Factory to back himself up, damage down the road once he’s in a robot body (for whatever reason) could still be fixed with a Victory Merge from those old backups. So if he didn’t get blown up now, he’d need to take memory damage soon enough that he didn’t have time to build another Heart Factory yet, and all the bots also need to die before then (because they can build another one too), and the backup needs to be destroyed as well, and AEGIS can’t or won’t produce SNOWMAN to have him do the work.

So basically, he’s got all these places where this tech could be resurrected from.

If the Bot is Leo (or a Leo backup), but an emergency failsafe “If you’re hearing this I’m dead” sort of Leo backup – already incarnated (a la SNOWMAN) but in cold storage in some lair … then this scenario can easily be crafted to so that it’s a “real” Leo but one whose damage couldn’t be restored. E.g., in the final battle against the Corps and their AEGIS lackeys, where the Newman family was, in fact, wiped out (and enough damage done to the backup to lead to this memory gap, among perhaps others).

(Alternately, I’m not sure how this variant of 4 couldn’t actually mean that the Bot is actually SNOWMAN, and perhaps that final mission that led to the Newmans’ demise was trying to destroy SNOWMAN or even just pith that bit of info from SNOWMAN’s memory, for obvious reasons.)

Anyway, that’s what I would have said earlier, but I was unavoidably detained.

Leo’s hope is that he can fill the future with people who don’t have to be afraid. Death and disease, hunger and want, mistrusting allies and abusive parents, all that stuff. There’s still things like uncertainty and anxiety and bigotry and more, but he can really lift the bar. And to throw that away? Like Doyce’s comment about “the plan is dismissive of risk but the math checks out”, that’s an outcome that our Leo’s mind could certainly process, but that our Leo’s heart would forcefully reject. That would make the Bot someone who, even if he shared a good chunk of Leo’s memories, wasn’t him (in Leo’s eyes). Call him something else - is “The War Doctor” already taken?

Mmmm… you hit me right in the analogy feels. Funnily, I never really got into Doctor Who but the idea of the War Doctor (beside being played by John Hurt) always resonated with me.

Hmm. That raises all sorts of possibilities related to “the future corporate-owned dystopia, and robot / Heart Machine shenanigans”.

Unrelated to any of my shenanigans, while we’re at AEGIS HQ, does Concord want (and/or get) an update on Facet’s status? Or did that change and I’ve forgotten?

I did, but got distracted in all the Vector stuff. Following up on that does still sound interesting to me.

Option 6 - Bot comes from one of the Newman branches, which of course came from Leo, so Bot ~= Leo.
