Goofy Ritual Theorizin’ Thread

Some stuff for our casters to think about!

Rituals table:

Mizzle doesn’t have access to any of the other Ritual types right now (e.g. Entropist). He does have access to any ritual that falls into one of these domains: knowledge, preservation, temperance (Grimoire), coincidences, prosperity, unforeseen events (Neko Monarch), revelation, storm, the night sky (Storm Crow), earth, plants, poison (Grandfather Oak), and honor, protection, sacrifice (Honor Beyond Death).

Saraid has could have access to anything in the Chimerism type.

What are some rituals that Mizzle has done?

  • Akashic Library Research. This is usually a Medium Individual (MP 30, DL 10) ritual to learn something about a specific subject. Domain: knowledge or revelation
  • Auspicious Meeting. This is a Major Individual (MP 40 DL 13) ritual to arrange an coincidental meeting with a named party, e.g. Ambra. Domain: coincidences
  • Protective Charm: A Major Individual (MP 40, DL 13) ritual to create a long-term protective charm for somebody, such as Scylia’s tassel or a warning trinket for Melody to guard against Ambra. Domain: protection

What are some rituals from the PDF supplement (linked above) that Mizzle is interested in? Of those, what would it take for him to cast them?

  • Alter Form. This could be neat for infiltrating Elonian installations. I’d need a domain about illusion, deception, or something else. Saraid could do it with Chimerism.
  • Augur Fate. This is pretty similar to Miz’s existing Divinations, though Miz’s version is more like an infodump and less like advice.
  • Contact Legendary Soul. This feels like something any Arcanist should reasonably be able to do with their Arcana, but domains like revelation feel appropriate if you want something else
  • Control Weather. This is situational but could be useful. I have limited access to this with the “storm” and “night sky” domains.
  • Manipulate Elements. This is a great general-purpose kind of thing, but I’d need the element-specific domains to use it.
  • Message. We did a version of this with Lady Ambra. I’ve leaned on the knowledge and revelation domains to make this happen.
  • Plant Growth. Like Manipulate Elements but for plants - situational but neat. Grandfather Oak gives me the earth and plants domains.
  • Sincerity. Telling the truth is great! Everyone should do it. I’ve got multiple relevant domains here: knowledge, revelation, and honor are all possibilities.
  • Teleport. MY BOY. I don’t have a great travel-type domain, but god damn do I want this. Pretty soon I’ll be able to hit the MP and DL targets to move the whole party around the world.

How about some other ritual ideas?

  • Counterspell Charm: It’d be great to negate Ambra’s invocation of Arcana the next time we meet. Protection or preservation domains might do it, but a magic/sorcery type domain would be even more appropriate.

How about rituals that need specific FabU elements? What’s my coverage look like?

  • Air - “the night sky” from Storm Crow is situational at best
  • Bolt - “storms” from Storm Crow is ehh
  • Earth - Grandfather Oak
  • Fire - nothing
  • Ice - nothing
  • Poison - Grandfather Oak
  • Light - nothing, though Honor Beyond Death does light damage
  • Dark - nothing directly, depending on how you interpret “the night sky” from Storm Crow

Actually just the Ritualism discipline. Margie hasn’t picked up Ritual Chimerism for Saraid yet.

Oh yeah, “with the appropriate skill” was hopefully implied, sorry

How about rituals in 4 levels, when Mizzle masters Arcanist and takes the Revelation Heroic Skill? Well, I get my own custom Arcanum of my very own. And I’m askin’ for the dragon.

The dragon has these domains: energy, magic, and renewal. Well shit, “magic” covers a lot, and “renewal” feels like a nice broad healing type domain. “Energy” could be read as giving me access to some of what generic Ritualism does. So the doors are flung open pretty wide.

The dragon has a dingus that says I can do Elementalism, Entropism, Ritualism, and Spiritism rituals. This only excludes Arcanism (which I have) and Chimerism (which the party could have). Furthermore, the first ritual in a scene is always half MP cost. This means I still need to hit the DL, but my 80-something MP pool stretches way further. This is the kind of shit that will let Mizzle teleport the party straight across the world, since that’s clearly an Entropism-type ritual.

How about some practical rituals we might need pretty soon? The future is hard to see, buuut…

Jenny Rescue Plan:

  • Do we know where she’s been taken to begin with? Time for a familiar divination: Medium Potency (locate someone or something), Individual Area, so 30 MP with a DL of 10.
  • Say that Jenny has been taken to some kind of fortress, and we want to get to her without fighting our way through a ton of soldiers? We can summon the Storm Crow to strike a fortress wall with lightning, letting us fly right up to it and perform the rescue. Medium or Major Potency, Small Area (as we’d just be blasting a hole in a wall, enough to let us get inside). This would be 60-80 MP and a DL of 10-13.
  • If inside a stone fort, Mizzle can toss off a quick ritual to seal up hallways - Minor Potency (“block a passage”), Small Area (“a room”), for 40 MP, with a DL of 7.

Other Ambra Search:

  • Mizzle did a divination a long time ago, and the second Ambra was located on an island. Is she still there? We can repeat the divination ritual to find out. Medium/Individual, 30 MP, DL 10

Lady Ambra Showdown:

  • Alluded to earlier: we don’t want Lady Ambra to summon another Arcanum out of Mizzle’s roster. Using the protection domain, we create a charm that provides an ongoing barrier around Mizzle. I’d call this Major Potency, Individual Area - although we could argue that it’s Small Area, if we’re effectively shielding multiple creatures. 40 or 80 MP, DL 13.

Important Note

Let’s talk about one thing the book says about rituals: “Generating creatures or equipment, or granting them permanent abilities” is not allowed. I don’t think I’ve been creating equipment as such, only physical tokens that act as the focal point for magic. I wouldn’t even call them accessories as such. I bring this up because maybe we want to be clear about the line here.

Different exercise! I’m going to come up with ritual ideas for every single Arcana domain I have access to. The rules are: it can’t be a ritual I’ve already used, or discussed here or elsewhere; it has to serve some hypothetically useful function; it has to be something Mizzle could cast, e.g. is within his MP budget.

  • knowledge: create a written record of everything Mizzle knows about a subject. The physical materials - ink, a writing implement, paper or books or whatever - must be provided. The ritual will only animate what it’s been given.
  • preservation: preserve an important memory, such as letting Mizzle recall the contents of an entire book he’s about to read.
  • temperance: calm a creature’s emotions and instincts, causing it to leave the party in peace.
  • coincidences: ensure that a written work, such as a book, will either find its way into good hands or back to its proper place in a library.
  • prosperity: lead the party to the nearest unclaimed treasure.
  • unforeseen events: transform the party’s next journey into an unforeseen event, foiling both magical divination and mundane anticipation of where they’ll go.
  • revelation: create a long-distance two-way communication link with another person.
  • storm: create a zone of bad weather to discourage pursuit. Create a shield against bad weather to permit Prisma to fly.
  • the night sky: increase the apparent brightness of the Moon and stars, letting the party travel at night with the same clarity as daytime. We might do this (for example) to avoid Elonian patrols in their territory, and trade travel rolls with them for wild animals or weirder dangers.
  • earth: create a cave, or enlarge an existing one, to serve as shelter from bad weather or hide from pursuers.
  • plants: accelerate the growth of important medicinal herbs (like those we found early on).
  • poison: invert the effects of a poison, strengthening that which would have been weakened.
  • honor: reveal who in a group will keep their word or act with integrity, and who will not.
  • protection: create a binding on a book of forbidden knowledge, only allowing it to be opened and read under certain conditions.
  • sacrifice: transform an offering, e.g. of food or blood or something else of ritual significance, into another form of energy.

One more pass at this, because doing it once feels like it’s been expanding my thinking. Every domain Mizzle has access to, all new rituals.

  • knowledge: scry on a situation from afar. Look at and listen to what’s happening to an area from a long distance away.
  • preservation: permit a soul entering the Stream to retain one key memory or aspect of themselves. There’s no telling when or how this element will awaken in their new life; it only guarantees that it can.
  • temperance: provide Mizzle (or the party) with a sense of manners and propriety, letting folks function in a high-society context without embarrassment.
  • coincidences: drive away randomness and fickle chance from a situation, allowing the most fateful or narratively appropriate outcomes to dominate.
  • prosperity: refine poor-quality materials into higher-quality ingredients. This cannot create magically significant rare materials, but can create more profitable mundane things.
  • unforeseen events: make a character a weirdness magnet by attracting nearby unforeseen events to them.
  • revelation: block someone from making an important realization (such as the identity of the party), or at least delay it until they’ve already come and gone.
  • storm: create snowfall over a region, making it easier to track people who pass through it.
  • the night sky: shrouds an area in night. Blocks light from entering, and may have other effects depending on what’s in the area.
  • earth: unearths something deeply buried, such as a buried treasure, grave, mineral deposit, etc.
  • plants: detect where a specific kind of useful plant can be found, e.g. herbs, nutritious fruits and vegetables
  • poison: create a selective poison that only affects weeds, pests, or other undesirable life. This can be used to help tend an herb garden, a farm’s crops, etc.
  • honor: gauge the good reputation attached to the caster’s name (or someone else of their choice): how are they seen by others?
  • protection: determine the kinds of protection surrounding a person or place, allowing the caster to determine weak spots, routes in and out, etc.
  • sacrifice: nudge fate the next time the caster would have to sacrifice something - it won’t negate the sacrifice, but will help the caster weather the worst of it
