(I’m not mocking, I think this is a really neat source of inspiration)

Yeah, I love these.

In my opinion, one of my favorite ships in recent memory has been the Faulcon deLacy Anaconda (from Elite: Dangerous). She may not be the prettiest ship or the fastest or the most deadly, but with some refits she can do it all.

And surprisingly, it is remarkably big. Like big enough for a crew of folks to not be stepping on top of one another all the time.

“Who are you guys, the Cult of the Smokey Eye?” wavy bladed knives come out “Listen you’ve really pulled this look together, though, I admire it.”

Also, can this be a thing?

I’ve only seen this given a name in one series (Borderlands) but have seen it in everything from Guardians of the Galaxy to Voltron.

Honestly I just think it looks cool. And if you’re looking for some sort of explanation on how it works and not “nanites” or “hard light holograms”, Mass Effect came up with this.

If it exists, it might be unusual, expensive, or political - “reztech” marks you as an Inner System partisan, “rust-tech” is for the provincial Belters or rebels, for example. Or there’s a reason we have Used Future ships and stations, but hard-light weapons and tools.

I like this explanation.

Had to re-share this image from the Blades in the Dark/Scum and Villainy discord for tone if nothing else.

Always a fave.

And, of course, if it’s an Ur artifact, I’m sure it could do all that and only partially drive you mad in the process.

A few nice pieces from Elite: Dangerous’ sub-Reddit page.

Just warped into the Betelgeuse system.

On approach into a planet-based landing site.

Some humor for Bill (the class of ship is Python).

A ship landed at a geological survey site.

A space station on fire, its oxygen getting vented into space.

I collected these a while back as images for Google+ Events banners for a couple of people in a writing group who were doing SF. I’m sure they will come in handy for Roll20 backdrops or mood pieces, if nothing else.

Some fan-art, subtly referencing the Alien/Prometheus franchise - perhaps something of the Ur, or the Way.

EVE Online is a beautiful and dangerous universe. Source for these is here.

Goodness, don’t get me started on EvE. Here’s a few that might port over:

Unstable wormhole in front of a nebula:

These next two might make a good Firedrake frigate:

A carrier:

Same carrier:

Freight hauler with all the external pods removed:

Noble’s pleasure skiff.

This one strikes me as being somewhat in the Cerberus class of ship.

Another beat-up smuggler/cargo hauler.

Mining/industrial:

Lovely bit of space station over an inhospitable moon:

I’d lean hard on the Hegemony using Caldari designs, maybe, but this might also make a good Firedrake frigate…

More of that same faction’s ship design:

or this:

Big ol’ warship:

Another hauler sort of thing.

Annoyingly, one of the coolest ship designs in the game, you can’t actually fly - it’s an NPC drone deployed by incredibly expensive ships that can’t really be deployed without a full fleet backing it up as escort. For me, though, it makes a really nice one or two-person fighter, though I could easily map it out to have a basic bunk, galley, and such for longer flights.

In case we need civilian passenger craft to hit…

And finally just a pile of pix I like:

Coming into a station badly in need of repair. MAN I miss the pvp in that game.

Think this is a dedicated mining ship in the game, but it sure looks cool. EvE is pretty.

This screenshot is named “I don’t know what you’re doing, but…”

Here’s a promising one, to kind of go with the second lego one I shared:

“A modified hull, originally manufactured - probably - in the Indri workshops. The ship was a bulky thing, hunched like a vulture, with a blunt nose and fat thrusters mounted high on her flanks. A stubby tail assembly, the hump of a gun emplacement, and wings that swept down and back. She looked as if she couldn’t decide whether she was a light cargo hauler or a heavy fighter, and so wouldn’t be much good as either. One wing had been recently repaired, and she needed scrubbing down.”

Rolling a crit on Helm/Resist:

And finally one of dozen different jump gate designs:

Some possible helpful/inspirational character imagery: https://www.pinterest.com/bhopson16/space-adventure/

This image is a bit less grim-gritty-space-will-kill-you …

A few more:

And a few more commercial:

(That said, I will give Doyce a shiny nickel if he incorporates any of that imagery along the way.)

Having come to scum and villainy Via blades in the dark, it’s been very difficult not to picture all of this happening in a steampunk/Airship/Lady Blackbird setting.

The Tom Swiftian Raygun Gothic aesthetic is the mass media representation of Procyon elsewhere in the Hegemony.

  • It’s how things were originally and the meme is persistent
  • The Hegemony enforces the perception through tax credits to show creators, to keep the populace happy and discredit critics
  • It’s a deliberate recruiting tactic to lure people to the sector, either to become corporate wage slaves or easy pickings for pirates and swindlers, thus allowing a law and order crackdown
